Cabinetry design and installation technology news from April's KBIS Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas continues to percolate through the wood industry. In addition to finishing and wood species trends, and designs for changing households, online applications are a leading stream of KBIS innovation.

Also in this week's news: first U.S. laser edgebanders, a furniture factory fire, video of the world's largest wood structure, jet fuel from wood waste, a Steelcase acquisition and a Paladin Industries expansion.

The first laserTec Homag edgebander in the U.S. has been sold to Fred Smith Store Fixtures, Depauw, IN. Stiles Machinery, distributor of the system, says it has also sold two other laserTec edgebanders into a business furnishings and case goods manufacturer.

Wood waste to jet fuel for Washington State

Wood and composite component manufacturer Paladin Industries Inc. said it will invest $2 million to expand its Kentwood, MI operations, including $800,000 in new woodworking equipment and a plant addition.

Business furnishings giant Steelcase Inc. has purchased substantially all of the assets of bkm Total Office, one of its New England contract furniture dealers.

Lumber contract prices fell along with other agricultural commodities such as cotton and sugar, providing relief for wood industry purchasing managers.
