SANTIAGO, Chili — CMPC is a global company that produces and markets forest products, cellulose, paper and tissue products from plantations certified with responsible forest management.
Raimundo Varela, company CEO, in a letter to its employees and other corporate partners regarding the company's continued focus on sustainability, said that for the second consecutive year, CMPC has been named the most sustainable forestry and paper company in the world by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).
The DJSI evaluates more than 10,000 companies, of which only about 3,500 meet the criteria to be considered for the global index and then, after scrutiny via more than 90 questions, about 300 are ranked as leaders in their various industrial and commercial sectors.
In addition, Varela said the company played an active role in the recent COP on Biodiversity ( Conference of the Parties) held in Cali, Colombia, presenting details of its Nature, Biodiversity & Conservation strategy, specifically, the Patagonia Project. The initiative involves setting aside more than 26,000 hectares for conservation in the Aysén region of southern Chile, in the heart of Patagonia. Just over half of this area was originally destined for productive uses, but thanks to the project, it will be left untouched, contributing to the biodiversity of the area.
During the week beginning Nov. 11, CMPC’s CEO, Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, Chief Commercial Officer Guilherme Viesi, and our global Commercial team, attended London Pulp Week, an event that brings together the main players in the industry, to discuss our future together.
Finally, in December, CMPC will be part of the COP on Desertification to be held in Saudi Arabia. "It will be a good opportunity to share experiences, especially Chile’s example of dealing successfully with the challenge of soil degradation which it faced at the beginning of the last century, thanks to the establishment of forestry plantations on land with high levels of erosion," Varela said.
With 100 years of experience in the wood industry, the company has production plants in eight Latin American countries and reaching more than 45 countries around the world. One of its companies is Powell Valley Millwork, an FDMC 300-ranked company domestic supplier of Poplar and Radiata that is located in the heart of the Appalachian forest.
