Urban Wood Utilization Guide

BALTIMORE — The Unified Wood Economy released a “playbook” to help cities, nonprofits, and urban forestry professionals turn downed trees and woody debris into high-value products.

The Urban Wood Utilization Guide: A Playbook for Establishing a Municipal Program was funded by CalFire and the USDA Forest Service. The guide provides a technical framework designed to help municipalities and other organizations transition from wood waste disposal or low value uses to a value-added “circular economy” model.

The 48-page guide walks users through pre‑planning, partnerships, implementation, and monitoring. It also highlights economic valuation tools, sustainability criteria, and strategies for integrating wood utilization into broader climate and waste reduction goals.
