Sauder Woodworking Recalls TV Stands

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Sauder Woodworking Co. of Archbold, OH, has issued a voluntary recall for approximately 414,000 TV stands.

The recall comes on the heels of 43 reports of TV stands collapsing; most of them had been recently assembled. The CPSC said the TV stands can collapse if the fasteners used to connect the metal legs to the lower shelf are not completely tightened during assembly.

Three injuries required medical treatment, including a broken arm, a torn rotator cuff with a concussion and an injured finger. These injuries reportedly happened when consumers attempted to prevent a TV from falling off the stand.

The stands were sold nationwide through Wal-Mart stores and online at Wal-Mart.com from January 2005 through May 2007 for about $90.

Consumers are urged to stop using the TV stand immediately if it moves from side-to-side. They are also urged to contact Sauder for detailed instructions on checking the tightness of the fasteners.
