Potential buyer emerges for West Fraser's shuttered FL sawmill

West Fraser’s decision to permanently close the Perry sawmill came 15 months after it indefinitely curtailed operations.

PERRY, Fla. — WCTV reported that an investor has expressed interest in acquiring the Perry, Florida, sawmill that West Fraser permanently closed last April.

The news source said John Sherrill of Sherill Coastal Holdings recently appeared before the Taylor County Board of Commissioners seeking $500,000 in potential property tax breaks to assist in the sawmill’s purchase. Sherrill told the commissioners that he specializes in acquiring closed plants or mills across the South to revitalize them for resale.

West Fraser’s decision to permanently close the Perry sawmill came 15 months after it indefinitely curtailed operations. West Fraser acquired the Perry sawmill from Gilman Building Products in 2017.

In addition to the Perry sawmill, West Fraser announced last January that it intended to shutter two other Southeast sawmills last year, one in Maxville, Florida, and the other in Huttig, Arkansas.
