PERUMBAVOOR, INDIA - Representatives of the South Indian Plywood Manufacturers Association said they would make efforts to get some plywood factory owners to clean up their plants.
Citizens of the area have engaged in long and loud protests by the Action Council for Environmental Protection in Perumbavoor against plywood plants that operate in residential areas of Peumbavoor. The plywood association has agreed to take up the matter at a May 16 meeting, according to IBNLive.Action Council for Environmental Protection in Perumbavoor
C K Abdul Majeed, general secretary of the plywood association, told the news source, "Though the protests by certain sections of people in Perumbavoor are blown out of proportion, we agree that some of the things pointed out by them are relevant. Some of the plywood factory owners have been oblivious to the aspect of cleanliness in their factory compounds. It has serious consequences. The meeting on May 16 will discuss the issue.”
Abdu Majeed added that the association is asking the government to provide sites that would allow plywood factories located in residential areas to relocate. That may not be possible as there are reportedly hundreds of plywood mills in Perumbavoor.
