The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) is teaming up with both Michigan State University and Michigan Tech University (MTU).
According to a report by WLUC, the partnership was formed to help promote mass timber construction.
“This relates to our mass timber facility that we are building in Newberry for our new customer service center for the Department of Natural Resources,” MDNR Forest Resources Division Timber Sales & Utilization Program Area Unit Manager Brenda Haskill told WLUC.
The technique allows larger buildings to be constructed out of engineered wood panels and beams instead of stone and concrete. Michigan red pine is being used for this project.
