One million chests recalled due to tipover hazard

Ridgewood Industries has recalled four-drawer chests due to tip-over and entrapment hazards. The chests were made in Canada and sold exclusively at Kmart stores.

The product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumers should stop using the product immediately.

This recall includes Belmont four-drawer chests with plastic drawer glides. The recalled chests were sold in two sizes and four colors, each with its own model number, which can be found on the instruction manual that came with the item.

About one million of the Belmont four-drawer chest units were made. The recalled chests are reported to be unstable and can tip over if not anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children.

Additionally, those models of chests over 30 inches tall do not comply with the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard (ASTM F2057-14).

No tipover incidents have been reported on this model. Regardless, Ridgewood Industries and the CPSC encourage consumers to attach all chests and dressers to the wall.

Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest that is not properly anchored to a wall and place them in an area that children cannot access.

Contact Ridgewood to receive a free anchoring kit. Consumers can request a one-time, free in-home installation of the wall anchor kit. Order the anchoring kit online at http://ameriwoodhome.com/eng/recalls/belmont-dresser-notice-us

Call Ridgewood toll-free at 888-222-7460 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST.
