KAMLOOPS, BC --

Firefighters responding to what was termed a "stubborn fire" Jan. 31 at Tolko's Heffley Creek plywood mill, were able to bring the blaze under control before it could do more damage.

The fire reportedly started in sawdust and other wood materials located under a veneering lathe.

The chief of the Kamloops fire department said winter weather conditions helped keep the fire from spreading faster.

Last month, Tolko officials announced that the company's Kelowna, BC, veneer operation, closed since January 2007, will not be reopened.
