Bruce Akhurst, former Akhurst Machinery owner, has died

DELTA, British Columbia — Bruce Akhurst. former owner and vice president of Akhurst Machinery, died on Aug. 16 following a battle with dementia. He was 78.

Bruce Akhurst joined his father H.W. "Spud" and brother Brian in the family business in 1970, and played a pivotal role in driving the company's growth. Throughout his career, Bruce introduced several renowned brands to the North American market, including the Reform range of knife grinders and Leadermac moulders.

Akhurst Machinery is one of North America’s largest independent machinery distributors, with branches located across Canada and in the United States. The group includes Cantek America and Leadermac USA.  Bruce Akhurst retired in 2017, and today the company is run by sons Graham and Ryan, along with Bruce's nephew, Brent.

Born Feb. 17, 1946, Bruce Akhurst is survived by his wife Alexia, children Graham (Colleen), Ryan (Jen), and Christie; stepchildren Angus (DJ) and Erin Woodworth; and grandchildren Malia, Davis Liam, Aiden, Dawson, and Nalini. Bruce is also survived by his brother, Brian Akhurst. 

A LinkedIn posting by the company noted, "Bruce had an exceptional ability to connect with others through his infectious enthusiasm and approachable demeanor. A stalwart figure in the North American woodworking machinery industry, his absence is keenly felt by all who had the privilege of working with him. Bruce dedicated his life to his work, leaving an indelible mark that will resonate for generations."

According to an obituary posted in the Vancouver Sun,  a celebration of life will be held on Sept. 5 in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Akhurst's memory to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.
