Windows & doors: Industry snapshots

Valued at $20.1 billion in 2023, the U.S. windows and doors industry is projected to grow from the $21.2 billion estimated for 2024 to $32.3 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 5.4%, according to Market Research Future’s (MRFR) USA Windows and Doors Market report. The residential sector, particularly in the Southeast, dominates the market.

Globally, the windows and doors industry is expected to grow from $221.9 billion in 2023 to $348.4 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 5.80% (2024 - 2032). Factors driving this growth include new construction, energy efficiency regulations, and the renovation and retrofitting of aging infrastructure, noted MRFR.

Customization and design flexibility are influencing consumer choices, along with automation and smart features such as the integration of IoT-enabled sensors.

• The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA)  projects U.S. demand for residential windows in new construction to rise 4% in 2024 and 2% in 2025 before flattening in 2026. Remodeling and replacement window demand is forecast to shrink 5% in 2024, then grow 2% in 2025 and 2026. The residential door market is expected to see growth in 2024 through 2026.

• Popular window replacement materials are: vinyl (44.2%), fiberglass (15.7%), wood (15.0%), clad wood (10.7%) and aluminum (10.6%), according to HIRI’s Trends in Residential Window Purchases.

• According to the WDMA 2024 U.S. Market Study for Windows, Architectural Interior Doors, and Patio & Entry Doors, despite high interest rates posing challenges for high-budget projects, there are positive signs for 2025 and 2026, including potential interest rate reductions, easing supply chain constraints, stabilized material prices, and government initiatives to increase housing supply.

• Although more than 60% of consumers “shopped” online for windows and doors, when it comes to actual purchases, 51% of U.S. and 56% of Canadian consumers went to retail stores, according to research by TraQline/Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI).
