BURNABY, B.C. — The workers at furniture maker Van Gogh Designs in Surrey, B.C., have voted to join Unifor to fight for better working conditions. Van Gogh Designs make custom furniture for retailers and furniture stores across Canada.
“Welcome to Unifor—we’re thrilled to be in your corner,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “We’re looking forward to bargaining your first collective agreement and building worker power with your solidarity.”
The 74 new members at Local 433 work in production including sewing, cutting, cushion, upholstery, wrapping, inventory, framing, and quality checking with additional members performing duties in the office. Clients include Urban Barn, Country Living Furniture, Roma Furniture and Creative Home furnishings.
Unifor Local 433 represents workers from various employers and sectors in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island region, organizing them for collective bargaining and workplace representation. Van Gogh Designs workers approached Unifor with a number of important issues that have been left unresolved in the workplace. This led to a successful organizing drive that began in late 2025.
“Congratulations to our new furniture maker members,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “Unifor is the workers’ union, and we will fight for their rights for a better working conditions.”
“These are hardworking people that deserve adequate compensation for their labor. We are incredibly proud that these workers chose Unifor to represent them,” said Justin Gniposky, Unifor Director of Organizing.
