Enhance color with steam
Q: We are planning to build a steamer so we can enhance the color of our walnut, beech and cherry lumber. Because we will never use a steamer full time, however, we have decided to build a combination kiln/steamer. We plan to steam the lumber on stickers and then go immediately into the kiln schedule when steaming is completed. Any comments?

Using beetle-killed pine
Q: I have started making furniture out of beetle-killed pine. The blue streaks add character indeed. Unfortunately, the suppliers pine is about 16 percent MC and I think I need to get the lumber down to 7 percent MC. The supplier cannot or will not do this for me. What can I do?

Grain raising
Q: We have drawer fronts that now, several months after manufacture and finishing, have grain raising. The rings of the tree are actually raised, forming a corrugated surface. Any ideas?

Small, raised spots on sycamore
Q: We are experiencing raised "pimples" after machining Sycamore. It occurs on 1 to 5 in 100 pieces. It is always on glued rails and on flat sawn grain. It is very random but appears to be associated where glue has dried. The problem also appears only on the sap not the heartwood. We also run sap gum and silver leaf soft maple into this product but have never seen these random raised pimples.

Estimating moisture content changes
Q: We have a floor that has developed some cracks between the pieces. We know that the moisture content right now is 6.2 percent MC. Is there any way to calculate the moisture content at the time of installation prior to the development of cracks?

Fuzz after sanding
Q: We seem to notice some fine fuzz on the surfaces of our oak and yellow-poplar lumber after sanding. It seems to be in streaks or in certain pieces of wood, but not others. It also comes and goes; some days it is worse than others. The fuzz is a real problem if we let it go into the finishing room. Any ideas?

Ipe or pine for doors?
Q. We have always used pine for our doors, but recently had a request to use ipe. We were impressed with the color and so on, but we seem to be having moisture issues such as buckling, etc. Any hints?
