The Jamesville Volunteer Fire Department and emergency crews from other agencies were dispatched to a Weyerhaeuser facility wood plant that caught fire around 11:20 a.m. on January 2. This was the second fire at the Plymouth, North Carolina, facility in about a year.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
A company spokesperson confirmed that a fire occurred in the baghouse. There were no injuries, and it was contained in the afternoon. The representative said the company is assessing the damage to the facility.
According to the department's Facebook post, the fire was in the bag house at the planer mill when crews arrived. The Plymouth Fire Department was scene, and the Janesville team began to fight the fire with aerial crews. Multiple hand lines were stretched and put into operation both interior and exterior.
Crews quickly knocked down the main body of the fire, but crews faced multiple issues with accessing the other pockets of fire throughout the equipment in question. All fires that were threatening the mill itself were extinguished, and then extensive operations were started on the fires in the elevated areas.
"Our crews finished overhaul operations and cleared the scene around 1830 (6:30 p.m.) this evening. It was a long day, but the teamwork of multiple agencies made it a little easier. crews say the fire was burning the bottom area and tops of the facility."
This was the second fire to torch the facility in about a year. On Dec. 18, 2022, a fire started inside the kiln on the wood products side of the facility. Due to the configuration of the treatment operation, there was a delay in getting the product out of the structure. The way the wood was stacked also caused issues with extinguishment, according to the Facebook report on the incident.
