President Trump ordered Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to double tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada in retaliation for the government in Ontario, Canada, for increasing tariffs on "electricity." 

Writing March 11 on his Truth Social account, Trump said, "Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an additional 25% tariff, to 50%, on all steel and aluminum coming into the United States from Canada, one of the highest tariffing nations anywhere in the world. This will go into effect tomorrow morning, March 12th."

 Trump also said that Canada must "immediately" drop tariffs on various U.S. dairy products, he also threatened increasing tariffs on automobiles, and that the U.S. should not pay for protecting Canada militarily. He said that the U.S. was subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than $200 billion dollars a year. 

"This cannot continue," he wrote. "The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished fifty-first state. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear."
