LINDWOOD, N.C. - Bedding component manufacturing giant Leggett & Platt will lay off 172 employees at its facility in Linwood, N.C. in an effort to consolidate operations.

Recent quarters have been tough on the company, president and CEO Karl Glassman said in a press release.

"The Fashion Bed and Home Furniture businesses have underperformed expectations in recent quarters, primarily from weaker demand and higher raw material costs," said Glassman. "An in-depth analysis of these businesses was conducted, and we are exiting low margin business, reducing operating costs and eliminating excess capacity."

The layoffs are almost entirely in production, including machine operators, welders, assemblers, and painters. The affected employees will be let go by April. Leggett & Platt says it will assist laid-off employees with job search aid and if necessary, see that they get federal assistance.

Leggett & Platt is a leading U.S. manufacturer of bedding and home furniture components and automotive seat support systems. The company employs 22,000 across 120 manufacturing facilities in 18 countries.
