SPEARFISH, S.D. — Logs and woodchips from 2025 tree removals on City of Spearfish property are being made available free to the public for pick up.
The free urban wood is part of the city’s Urban Wood Utilization Program. Woody material generated by the city’s tree care operations include logs that can be used for furniture, cabinets, flooring and other high-value products.
“The end-use of this material will be up to the discretion of the participants in the program,” said Rex McDonald, superintendent of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. “Depending on the types of removals done, some pieces may be best for firewood and others may be appropriate for woodworking projects. This year, we will also be offering woodchips, available on the site, which can be used in landscaping or around the base of young trees.”
The urban wood materials are available on a first-come, first-served basis through April 12.
Participants must sign a waiver and are responsible for the loading and transporting of any material they wish to take. Participants may cut the logs on site to make transport easier, but any splitting, carving, or other woodworking must be completed offsite.
