41 furniture designs vie for top honors at IWF

ATLANTA — Winners of the IWF Design Emphasis 2024 student design contest will be announced Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Design Emphasis Gallery, located in Building C of the Georgia World Congress Center. Forty-one finalist projects in five categories are vying for a share of more than $10,000 in prize money.

A biennial competition, Design Emphasis is for students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited college or university. Sponsored by IWF and its owner, WIA (Woodworking Industry Association), the competition gives students a platform to showcase their talents to the industry. 

Cash prizes will be awarded to the best of show ($1,500), and to the winners ($1,000), merit ($500) and honorable mentions ($250) in each category. The five categories are: Accent Furniture, Case Goods, Commercial/Hospitality Furniture, Design Creativity, and Seating. 

Projects will be on display in the Design Emphasis Gallery throughout IWF. North America's largest woodworking event takes place Aug. 6-9 in Atlanta.

The panel of judges is chaired by Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of Public Relations and Marketing for the American Home Furnishings Alliance, and includes member the manufacturing industry, design/media community and academia. Products are judged by the panel for design (40 percent), manufacturing, i.e., adaptable or suitable to volume production methods (20 percent), marketability (20 percent) and workmanship (20 percent).
