Cuts for end-joining pieces of different thicknesses

End joining two pieces of wood of different thickness at an angle

I need to join a 1/2" piece to the end of a 3/4 inch piece. Each piece is 1 1/2" wide. They will be glued together, so I need smooth, flat surfaces. I want to join them as shown in the image. Only the piece on the left has to be cut, since the other is square (so the cutout is 90° but not at right angles to the surface of the piece that's cut). I only have hand tools. My hand router tore up the piece, because I couldn't devise a jig or clamp that was stable enough to hold it still. The actual angle isn't critical
