ADRIAN, Mich. — Step inside the very fine work of Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute's graduating students and select SBWI faculty and alumni at the 2026 Michigan Contemporary Craft exhibition. Hosted for the first time at the Hickman Gallery on the campus of Adrian College, this annual exhibition is a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and the next generation of woodworkers.

Join SBWI for the opening reception on Friday, May 29 from 5:30–7:30 p.m., or visit into the early summer, as the exhibition remains on view through July 18. Graduates of the class of 2026 will display work in the gallery from May 29 through June 5. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

“This exhibition is a celebration of craftsmanship, design, and the incredible growth our students achieve during their time at SBWI,” said Luke Barnett, president of SBWI. “It’s also an invitation for the public to encounter the timeless art of woodworking as it continues to evolve here in Michigan.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet students in the gallery, hear about their process, and participate in this important milestone for our school community. Many pieces will be available for purchase, and students are available to discussing custom commissions.

This year’s exhibition also marks an exciting transition. Previously held at the Adrian Armory, the show now moves to the Hickman Gallery, part of Adrian College’s newly renovated art facilities. The new location reflects a deepening collaboration between SBWI and Adrian College, as both institutions continue to explore expanded curriculum partnerships in craft, design, and the built environment.

“Hosting the Michigan Contemporary Craft Exhibition at Hickman Gallery marks an exciting step in our growing partnership,” said Travis Erxleben, Chair of the Department of Art at Adrian College. “It’s a privilege to welcome these artists to campus and celebrate not only their skill and dedication, but also the vibrant creative community we are continuing to build together.”

Located in Adrian, the exhibition is an easy trip from Ann Arbor, Toledo, and Detroit with plenty to see and do.

"Whether you’re coming to support a student, explore the work, or simply spend time in a space dedicated to craft with likeminded artisans, we hope you’ll join us for this meaningful moment for our students and for everyone who has been part of their journey," says SBWI.
