SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A souped-up leather sofa hit 101 mph (163 km/hr) on a runway at the Camden Airport in Sydney, Australia, setting a new Guinness World Record.
Driven by Glen Sutton, the two-seat sofa incorporates a built-in coffee table to help with wind resistance. Built by race car and bike designers Evolution Motorsport, the sofa was powered by a Suzuki GSX 1400 motorcycle engine. (See video below)
The new speed mark, set Sept. 26, 2011, breaks the previous Guinness record of 92 mph (148 km/h) on a motorized couch, set by Britain’s Marek Turowski in 2008.
Still leading in the overall fastest furniture race, however, is “Fast Food,” a dining set driven by Perry Watkins on Sept. 5, 2010, at the Santa Pod Raceway in Bedfordshire, UK. This furniture reached a speed of 113.8 mph (183.14 km/h).
