Fast sofa sets new Guinness World RecordSYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A souped-up leather sofa hit 101 mph (163 km/hr) on a runway at the Camden Airport in Sydney, Australia, setting a new Guinness World Record.

Driven by Glen Sutton, the two-seat sofa incorporates a built-in coffee table to help with wind resistance. Built by race car and bike designers Evolution Motorsport, the sofa was powered by a Suzuki GSX 1400 motorcycle engine. (See video below)

Fast sofa sets new Guinness World RecordThe new speed mark, set Sept. 26, 2011, breaks the previous Guinness record of 92 mph (148 km/h) on a motorized couch, set by Britain’s Marek Turowski in 2008.

Still leading in the overall fastest furniture race, however, is “Fast Food,” a dining set driven by Perry Watkins on Sept. 5, 2010, at the Santa Pod Raceway in Bedfordshire, UK. This furniture reached a speed of 113.8 mph (183.14 km/h).
