INTERIOR WOODWORKING
ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORKERS 2,500 architectural woodwork and millwork firms (1,019 are Architectural Woodwork Institute members) serve architects, builders, designers, and contractors, doing some residential, but principally handling commercial interiors.
Architectural woodworkers track American Institute of Architects’ Billings and Inquiries Indices and the U.S. Architectural Inquiries, both of which are running ahead — auguring well for construction 9 months down the line — and interior millwork project subcontracts. Architectural woodworkers are busier than ever, but the average billing is lower than in past years.
CUSTOM CABINETMAKERS and furniture manufacturers build and install kitchen cabinets, mantels, libraries, staircases and furnishings. Of shops under $250,000 revenue, 46.5% are single-person operations and 49.1% employ 2-3. Those billing $250,000 - $500,000 employ 2-3 (49.5%) to 4-7 (39.8%) workers. Those billing $500,000 - $1 million are more likely to employ a higher number of workers.
PRODUCT LINES: Architectural woodworkers handle principally interior millwork, casework, business and institutional interiors. Cabinetmakers handle kitchen cabinetry and residential millwork. |
58% of cabinetmakers outsource doors; 44.2% outsource ornaments and corbels; 36.5% drawers. | 1,019: Members in the Architectural Woodwork Institute; 466 are Quality Certified by AWI's QCP. | Custommade.com lists 7,000 'Makers' of cabinets, custom furniture and wood products. | Sources: Architectural Woodwork Institute, Cabinet Makers Association, American Institute of Architects |
