DES MOINES, IA - Kreg Tool Company founder Craig Sommerfeld will be donating an easy-to-build table saw, along with teaching a two-day hands-on seminar for the machine, to aspiring woodworkers in El Salvador this October. The trip is courtesy of Tools for Opportunity, a tax-exempt non-for profit organization that distributes tools and offers loans to woodworkers in impoverished areas around the world.
Sommerfeld, a board member of Tools for Opportunity, has previously given Kreg jig sets and other tools to local woodworkers in El Salvador with the organization this past May. He witnessed first hand some of the dangerous homemade tools the locals use.
"It's not safe or very precise to use some of these homemade saws," says Sommerfeld. "It's cost-prohibitive for us to supply woodworkers with full-size table saws, so we're providing plans, motor, arbor, pulleys, and blades for the woodworker to build his or her own table saw."
Tools for Opportunity President Gene Pedersen, who will also be going on the trip, says that tool demonstrations won't be all that the seminars will teach.
"We have to educate them on common business practices such as cost of supplies and labor to calculate a selling price to generate profits they can put back into their business and also enable them to feed their families."
