SAN SALVADOR, PHILIPPINES -- Equipment of a plywood factory operated by the Casilayan Softwood Development Corporation in San Salvador was set on fire during a raid Monday by members of the New People's Army (NPA).

About 20 gun-toting rebels of the communist group attacked the factory, according to the Midano Examiner. A military spokesman told the news agency that it believed the factory was attached because it refused to pay "revolutionary taxes." No injuries were reported nor was the extent of damage to the plant.

Rebels have reportedly launched similar extortion-motivated attacks on mine, fruit plantations and other businesses that would not make payments.

The Maoist NPA has been in a protracted war against the Philippine government since 1969.
