Dressers recalled for violating tipover standard

Two hundred dressers from LFN Limited, of China, and sold by Rooms to Go, were recalled for being a tip-over hazard.

In a first such action, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the Mill Valley Junior, a six-drawer dresser by LFN Limited of China that was sold exclusively at Rooms to Go for violating a year-old, Federally mandated tip-over standard.

This recall involves dressers approximately 57-½ inches long by 18 inches wide by 35 inches high, and weighing about 132 pounds.

Although no injuries have been reported, the CPSC has found the dresser to be a tip-over risk.

This recall is the first action CPSC has taken due to a violation under the STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) standard since it went into effect last year. STURDY requires additional safety testing for stability for dressers, armoires, wardrobes, and other clothing storage units.

According to the CPSC notice, the recalled dressers, which were imported by LFN Limited and manufactured in Vietnam, are unstable if they are not properly anchored to the wall, posing serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in injuries or death to children. The dressers violate the performance requirements of the STURDY Act, the CPSC said.

In April 2023, the CPSC voted to adopt ASTM International's tip-over rule as a mandatory federal standard. The ASTM F2057-23 standard applies to free-standing clothing storage units, such as dressers, chests, and armoires, that are 27 inches or taller. The standard requires that a unit can withstand a 60-pound test weight applied to the most likely part of the unit to tip over, without tipping, for 30 seconds.

Rooms To Go said that they will provide a free replacement dresser, and will schedule a free delivery of the replacement and remove the recalled dresser. The retailer is contacting all known purchasers directly.
