2024 Sustainable Scorecard assessment begins

The Sustainable Furnishings Council and the National Wildlife Federation have begun their assessment of over 100 North American furniture retailers on their wood sourcing policies. The scorecard will be released in November, which gauges the year-over-year progress of furniture retailers and their sustainability practices.

New home sales down in April

Mortgage rates that averaged above 7% since mid-April per Freddie Mac data acted as a drag on new home sales last month, according to a new National Association of Home BuildersSales of newly built, single-family homes in April fell 4.7% to a 634,000 seasonally adjusted annual rate from a downwardly revised reading in March, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. The pace of new home sales in April is down 7.7% from a year earlier.

Furnishings weekly industry report: Commercial stocks outperform

Container rates spiked, while the Commercial/Contract Furniture Index (+2.3%) outperformed the broader market indexes (all three up +1.6%) and our Mass Retailers Index (+0.6%) last week. Residential Manufacturers & Suppliers (-3.8%) and Home Goods Retailers (-2.8%) trailed.

ISM: Economic improvement to continue through 2024

Manufacturing is expected to expand in 2024 at a slower pace than projected in December 2023; revenue is to increase 2.1%; capital expenditures to increase 1%; capacity utilization at 82.8%; services are expected to expand in 2024 at a slightly slower pace than projected in December 2023; revenue to increase 2.9%; capital expenditures to increase 1.4%; capacity utilization at 88.6%.
