Furniture industry reports largest industry contraction; wood products reports third most contraction

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Furniture industry orders contracted the most of overall industries, and wood products manufacturers ranked third in terms of contraction in September 2022 compared to August. In addition, while economic activity in the manufacturing sector grew in September, with the overall economy achieving a 28th consecutive month of growth, the overall Manufacturing PMI dropped to its lowest level since May 2020, according to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business.

Masonite permanently layoffs workers in Indiana

Florida-based Masonite International Corp. is reducing its staff in St. Joseph County, Indiana. The company, which manufactures doors for residential and commercial applications, said in a notice to the state it will lay off more than 30% of the workforce at its facility in the town of Walkerton.

Senate Passes STURDY Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate passed an amended version of the STURDY Act by unanimous consent on Thursday, bringing a mandatory furniture stability standard within one final vote of becoming law. The Senate version of STURDY (S. 3232) – the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act – was modified from the original version passed by the House in June 2021. Therefore, the legislation must go back to the House one more time for a final vote.
