American Furniture Design Co., Escondido, CA, is a sister company to Murphy's Fine Woodworking. It submitted this oak sideboard entry in the Custom Woodworking 2013 Design Portfolio, a classic Mission style, with classic tenon construction.

"We feel that this piece represents our Mission Line at its very best," says Brian Murphy in his entry. "The legs are designed with the quadralinear post construction. These posts have four quartersawn boards mitered and then glued.

"This design technique best displays the oak’s ray flake that seems to wrap around the leg. The unit is made of highly figured quartersawn red oak and cherry keys are inlaid in the doors and the top. The drawers are felt lined and the hardware is bronze."

American Furniture Design is the furniture plan side of Murphy's Fine Woodworking, offering designs from leading craftsmen covering many areas of furniture design. Plans include 36 x 48" CAD generated schematics and a booklet of instructions, with techniques, jigs and fixtures. Murphy shows how a classic Morris Chair is built in the video below.
