Dave Skinner of WeDoClosets, Russell, Ontario, Canada, is a finalist in the 2015 Top Shelf Design Awards competition with their project “A Triple Crown for a Princess” entered in the Specialty category.

Project Description: The Triple Crown: a bed, a storage system and a desk all rolled into one beautiful canopy bed that will make this princess the envy of all her friends. The bed holds a standard single mattress very comfortably. The doors swing open so that making the bed is not a chore and there's no excuse not to have it ready for visitors at any time. Storage for clothing and toys is easily accessed with 34" deep drawers on soft-closes slides. Books and toys can be neatly arranged on the shelves inside the bed area. The 19x39 desk area is set at the correct height and is large enough to hold a laptop, work supplies and homework. Motion activated rechargeable LED lighting makes this desk space bright and a pleasure to use. The proper work environment builds good study habits and this young girl will be the Queen of industry when she grows up.

Project Construction Details: The bed is designed to be transported flat-packed, with the exception of the canopy which disassembles into two halves. Once all of the parts are in the room the straight forward assembly process can begin. A combination of confirmat screws and furniture bolts make the process very simple. All melamine edges received 2mm edging for aesthetics and durability. Soft close full extension slides and in-drawer motion activated lighting provide for ease of use for drawers that are 30" deep.

Materials Used: 3/4 melamine was used throughout the project and edged with 2mm. All joinery is done with confimat screws and furniture bolts allowing the unit to be easily transported and assembled in the room, and then disassembled and moved if needed. Gold painted MDF and flexible plywood were used for the canopy. High quality velvet and gold rope were used to provide the elegant trim. CNC carved and hand-painted wheels make a statement. One of the elegant glass centers acts as a handle for one of
