Parkersburg, WV – Michigan resident Dennis Harrand will be furnishing his new workshop with a brand new Pinnacle workbench, thanks to a drawing sponsored by Woodcraft during the Woodworking in America show held in Covington, Kentucky, in October.

Harrand’s name was selected in a random drawing from entries submitted by visitors to the Woodcraft booth at the Woodworking in America show. Sterling Heights (MI) Woodcraft owner Matthew Scher presented the 72" × 29" × 36" Pinnacle Large Traditional Cabinetmaker’s Workbench to Harrand and his wife, Anita, during a ceremony at the store October 29.

The timing was perfect for Harrand, a North Branch resident who taught woodworking for 29 years at LakeVille High School in Otisville, Michigan, before retiring. “I have been planning a new shop for several years with the intention of building furniture and cabinetry, as well as upgraded built-ins for our house. The new workbench will become the centerpiece of the new space,” he said.

Harrand’s interest in woodworking dates back to junior high classes. Over the years he built furniture (indoor and outdoor) and made gifts for friends, but in the1980s he learned woodcarving, a passion that he soon incorporated into his woodworking classes. Anita, a nurse practitioner, shares her husband’s woodcarving interest, and the couple has taught classes and participated in woodcarving shows.

The new Harrand workshop would have been built sooner, but Dennis said after retiring he and his wife became volunteers for the Lapeer County Habitat for Humanity chapter, Dennis as building site manager and Anita as a worker doing everything from drywalling to roofing. Harrand is also still active in the Michigan Industrial & Technology Education Society, a statewide organization for industrial technology (shop) teachers that showcases student work in an annual spring exposition. Both Harrands have helped organize the statewide event for years and became acquainted with Scher, who sponsors a Woodcraft booth at the exposition.

“We haven’t opened the box yet as I am waiting to start my new workshop in the next week or so for its new home,” Dennis said. In the meantime the workbench is in temporary storage.
