FAIRFIELD, N.J. -- SGS North America Inc. today announced the expansion of its full-size and non-full-size crib safety testing services with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) certification of company labs in Fairfield, N.J., and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to test for compliance with new CPSC crib safety rules. Added to the earlier certification of the company's Shanghai lab, SGS now has the ability to test cribs to be sold in the U.S. market at all major points of manufacture.
In the U.S., the SGS lab in New Jersey now serves the large domestic crib manufacturing base. It also provides testing services for existing crib inventory produced domestically or imported to the U.S. on or after June 28, 2011, the effective date of the new standard.
In Shanghai and Vietnam, the ability to source crib testing from local SGS labs eliminates the need for Asian manufacturers to ship products to the U.S. for testing and avoids resulting delays in getting new crib models to market.
In all three locations, SGS can streamline compliance with U.S. safety standards by providing a single source for both physical and chemical testing as well as enabling easy access to local experts for consultation and problem resolution.
"The new CPSC crib standards mark a significant change in safety requirements, from banning traditional drop-side rail cribs to requiring stronger crib slats and mattress supports, improved hardware quality and more rigorous testing," said Piyush Shah, Toy and Juvenile Products Lab Manager of SGS North America Consumer Testing Services. "Our accreditation for testing in three global sites will simplify manufacturers' access to testing resources, ensure sufficient testing capacity, and assist our customers in bringing cribs up to code quickly and reliably."
The new 16 CFR 1219 and 16 CFR 1220 crib safety regulations were enacted in response to the recall of more than 11 million dangerous cribs since 2007, at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths associated with detaching drop-side rails since 2000, and additional deaths related to faulty or defective hardware. Compliance with the new standards must be certified by the manufacturer, importer or private labeler of record based on testing performed by an approved third-party conformity assessment body.
SGS's crib testing certifications extend a major corporate global initiative on juvenile products testing. The company's flagship U.S. lab in New Jersey is now certified to provide safety testing for compliance with all 22 current ASTM juvenile products standards, covering products such as baby bouncers, booster seats, toddler beds and toy chests as well as cribs. The company is also preparing to add or expand juvenile products testing services in at least seven overseas labs in Asia and Europe.
