FRANKFURT – Pfleiderer Industrie in Frankfurt has received the 2011 Design Plus Award from Material Vision, which is awarded by the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre and the Design Council, for its product innovation of BalanceBoard. The jury assessed BalanceBoard as an outstanding example of the processing of annual plants, considering it one of the most important achievements in material research for sustainable furniture production and interior design. With this award from Material Vision, BalanceBoard is automatically nominated for the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany.

“We are delighted to receive this award and are very proud that BalanceBoard, after four years of intensive development work, has been able to establish itself on the market so quickly and collect so many awards,” explains Stefan Göldner, Marketing Manager of Pfleiderer Industrie. This investment in the future of bio-materials has certainly been worthwhile, because BalanceBoard is sustainable, saves resources and is significantly lighter. At the same time, it fulfils all the technical requirements on comparable standard chipboard panels, without any of the disadvantages in processing and disposal that have to be accepted in the case of other light materials whose weight is reduced by means of synthetic materials.

The raw material supply is also ensured in the long term, since BalanceBoard consists of approx. 35% of annual plants which grow within one summer, close to the point of production. In times when wood is in short supply, this reliability is also appreciated by customers from the
furniture industry, the trade and interior design. With BalanceBoard, Pfleiderer can give them security of supply for generations to come. And the good feeling of doing something for the climate and the environment, because like wood, the plant granulate in BalanceBoard acts as a CO2 sink, permanently binding the carbon collected in quick-growing raw materials
during a summer. The lower weight also reduces the transport costs.
