ANN ARBOR, MI– Masco Cabinetry, manufacturer of three nationally recognized cabinetry brands - KraftMaid, Merillat, QualityCabinets - and the DeNova countertop brand, has been named a Smart Business Cleveland 2011 "Evolution of Manufacturing” award winner. The award is given to manufacturing companies located in Northeast Ohio whose organizations have demonstrated the ability to position themselves to take advantage of innovative opportunities for success in today’s new economy. Masco Cabinetry’s primary KraftMaid manufacturing facilities are located in Northeast Ohio. The organization was one of 11 manufacturing companies to win the award.
“We’re a customer-focused business,” said Bob Terhune, vice president of operations. “In order to meet or exceed customer demands in a highly competitive environment, we’ve evolved our manufacturing practices to deliver. Our most significant changes have been in sustaining lean manufacturing practices, implementing a flexible manufacturing system and in-sourcing component operations. The resulting operational improvements have helped us to significantly improve on-time complete delivery rates to our external customers.”
“The real credit goes to our employees,” said Chris Winans, vice-president of manufacturing. “Our culture is one of continuous improvement through increasing value and eliminating waste with participation by all employees. This practice has allowed us to adapt to the ever-increasing competitive pressures and opportunities of a global economy as well as to the recent collapse in the domestic housing industry. We focus on ongoing improvements in the areas of: quality, safety, delivery, cost, revenue and customer satisfaction.”
Masco Cabinetry’s continuous improvement statistics as of 2010 include:
* The implementation of over 16,000 improvement ideas
* An average of 8.1 improvement ideas per associate
* The execution of over 520 Kaizen events to address concerns, production issues and other improvement opportunities
* Completion of over 30 Six Sigma projects to address complex, cross-functional and high impact improvement opportunities
“The Ohio manufacturing operations (Middlefield, Orwell, Jackson) have played a key role in the execution of our lean manufacturing strategy,” said Terhune. “By challenging ourselves to reduce costs without sacrificing quality or our customers’ needs, we have successfully moved our manufacturing processes forward.”
