GREEN BAY, WIS. – KI has earned the 2010 WasteWise Large Business Partner of the Year Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. The award recognizes KI’s commitment to waste prevention and recycling initiatives, “buy recycled” efforts, and activities to promote WasteWise.
The EPA distinction honors KI’s ongoing mission to continuously enhance its sustainability, from implementing responsible product design and sustainable manufacturing practices, to providing architects and designers with the information they need to make environmentally friendly decisions when selecting furniture. The award also recognizes KI’s commitment to finding practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste and improve financial performance.
“As an environmentally-conscious company, KI embraces sustainability throughout all aspects of its business,” said Tim Heyrman, engineering manager, KI. “KI acts with a sense of urgency to create sustainable solutions and hold ourselves accountable for every action we take. We’re honored to be recognized with this prestigious award from the EPA.”
In presenting the WasteWise award, the EPA credited KI with several key accomplishments in reducing waste, including:
• Waste Prevention Initiatives—KI focuses its industrial efforts on reducing material contents in product, waste prevention in the manufacturing processes, material diversion from landfills, and in buying higher recycled content components. KI’s multi-faceted program has successfully recycled and reduced approximately 15 million pounds of industrial waste through material diversion and prevention over the last five years.
• Recycling Collection—To reduce the use of packaging materials, KI has found alternative methods to safely ship and receive products to and from suppliers, end-users and other manufacturing locations. KI successfully diverted approximately 953,624 pounds of packaging materials from landfills in 2009 by reducing materials used or converting to recycled materials.
• Promotion, Education and Outreach—Through tradeshows, environmental websites or various promotional materials, KI actively promotes environmental education both internally and externally.
Previous WasteWise Packaging Reduction Gold Achievement Awards were awarded to KI in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
