ARLINGTON, VA – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is pleased to announce the organization of a new self-funded product group, which will support the needs of the formaldehyde industry. ACC provides issue management services to support specific chemical product and sector groups under its Chemical Products and Technology (CPT) divisions.
The new group was approved by ACC’s board of directors in June, and will represent the producers, users, and suppliers of formaldehyde and formaldehyde products. Trade associations representing key formaldehyde applications will also be an important membership component of the new group. Formaldehyde is a basic-building block chemical, essential to an estimated $145 billion of the U.S. gross national product. Formaldehyde is used to produce a wide range of materials that include everything from life-saving medicines to adhesives and resins used in construction, aerospace and transportation, electronics, wind energy and many other industries. The Formaldehyde Panel’s primary activities will include advocacy, research, and marketplace outreach. Initial members of the expanding panel include two of the nation’s major formaldehyde producers: Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC, and Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc.
“We are pleased to welcome the formaldehyde sector to ACC. The addition of the panel reflects the business value that ACC provides through exceptional advocacy. Our self-funded groups provide the entire product value-stream a stronger and more effective voice,” said Rob Simon, vice president of the CPT divisions. “Our industry continues to face unprecedented challenges, and our collective voice helps protect the vitality of the product marketplace,” he added.
ACC’s chemical product and sector groups represent large and small manufacturers, formulators, downstream users, distributors, suppliers, and other trade associations. The CPT divisions provide comprehensive issue management services, including strategic counsel, advocacy, regulatory support, research, testing, product stewardship, education, outreach, and overall group administration.
To strengthen product-specific advocacy and increase industry engagement, ACC’s board last year agreed to allow chemical manufacturers to participate in self-funded product groups — such as the Formaldehyde Panel — without requiring them to join ACC.
