Brooklyn, N.Y. – Think Fabricate’s ongoing exploration of positive and negative space has led the Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary design studio to shift from the expected with a dynamic new line of cabinetry. Taking the classic concept of wall-mounted storage to a whole new level, Shift is an adaptable collection of cabinets of varying depth, color, composition and detail. After making its public debut at the Architectural Home Digest Show from March 22-25, SHIFT will be on the market transforming ordinary walls into sculptural spatial environments!
Like most of Think Fabricate’s unique lines of furnishings, Shift evolved from a custom design solution for a specific project. As Susan Doban, co-founder of Think Fabricate, explains, “We originally designed Shift to house and display large collections: in one case, an extensive collection of inherited cookbooks; in another, an assortment of antique toys. The varying depth of each cabinet adds to the sculptural quality of the whole composition but also creates a series of ledges that create special spots for small objects.”
Jason Gorsline adds, “The component elements were inspired by our ‘Cutting Edge’ cabinets, which feature a variety of profiles. Some have traditional profiles while others are chamfered on the outside or even tapered across the front, ensuring that each cabinet is unique.”
Whether used to cover an entire wall or to create a special corner, Shift adds an interesting twist to wall-mounted storage by combining traditional furniture making with modern details and configurations. Each version of Shift features a clever arrangement of five or more cabinets of varying colors, edge profiles and dimensions. They are available in one of four standard color palettes and coordinating wood veneer. Standard compositions include: Shift 48, Shift 36, and Shift 30 – a dynamic horizontal arrangement of five cabinets that are 48”, 36” and 30” wide, respectively; Shift Corner – a set of eight interlocking cabinets designed to wrap around a corner; Shift Connect and Shift Connect Plus – eight and ten cabinets, respectively, beautifully arranged on one wall; and Shift Lounge – a set of five cabinets whose orientation is shifted vertically.
Like all of Think Fabricate’s products, Shift is handcrafted in the company’s studio in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn and has the ability to be modified – or shifted – to meet one’s desires. Options for customization include: sliding Richlite doors, internal lighting, glass-enclosed storage, inset mirrors, and coordinating radiator shelves.
