The LIGNA 2015 Show Offers Spotlights on Select Exhibitors

Hannover, Germany - On 11 May, LIGNA will open its gates in Hannover, with a host of companies eager to showcase their innovations. The Trendspots offer a little taster of what you can expect to find at the fair.

A cut above: HOLZMA is at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover with a genuine world-first that is set to revolutionize cutting processes in order-based production – the HPS 320 flexTec.

Just a few weeks ahead of LIGNA 2015, it was officially confirmed that HOLZMA would be exhibiting in Hannover with a world-first that is set to revolutionize cutting processes in order-based production – the HPS 320 flexTec. In both craftwork and industry, the increasing demand for “batch size: 1” production poses major manufacturing challenges, as most production processes were originally designed to achieve maximum efficiency in mass production. With the new HPS 320 flexTec, HOLZMA has taken a radically different approach, delivering a cutting concept specifically tailored to customer-specific, “batch size: 1” production.

The HPS 320 flexTec executes custom cutting operations like mass production processes – exceptionally quickly and efficiently and with no need for manual handling. This is thanks to fully automated processes and a revolutionary new part transfer system that is individually tailored to the relevant type of production and the material to be cut. This also significantly reduces waste in cutting and makes it very easy to produce unlimited recuts. Further advantages include minimal space requirements, reduced maintenance needs and therefore significantly increased availability. All this makes for substantial savings in terms of time, material and costs.

SMC Pneumatik exhibits at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover with an additional size – SY7000 – for its New SY3000/5000 series of electromagnetic valves.

Some products have names that almost seem deliberately confusing – or do you know exactly what a “valve island” is, for example? If not, here’s a quick explanation from German Wikipedia: “A term used in pneumatics to describe a device that brings together several valves in one place, for instance by means of a shared, pre-assembled block. The advantage of using a valve island is that the air supply for the valves can be controlled centrally. This means a single connection can be used to supply all the valves on the island and cuts down substantially on individual tubing and connectors.” Well, that’s the theory anyway. To find out what a valve island actually looks like and how it works in practice, visitors to this year’s LIGNA in Hannover are advised to stop by at the SMC Pneumatik GmbH stand, where they can also check out the latest size in the company’s New SY3000/5000 series.

The additional size that SMC Pneumatik is unveiling for the electromagnetic valves in the New SY3000/5000 series is SY7000. Thanks to this new model – and the option of combining two different sizes on a single junction for multiple connections – valve islands can now be adapted even more flexibly to specific user requirements. What’s more, the metal seal version is rated at 200 million cycles and thus ensures maximum process reliability. Ideal for use in the wood processing industry, the New SY series is also used in the beverages, packaging and automotive industries and in specialist mechanical engineering and robotics.

Inline staplers!

Joh. Friedrich Behrens AG is unveiling the new BeA Skater at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover – the flexible and cost-effective alternative to nailing bridges for paneling work.

The first choice of fastener when it comes to large-scale timber frame construction and paneling works tends to be nailing bridges. Unfortunately, it just isn’t economical to use these large devices on many smaller projects, which means having to resort to manual labor and all manner of nail guns. However, Joh. Friedrich Behrens AG from Ahrensburg has come up with a cost-effective alternative to nailing bridges that is both practical and flexible. Its BeA Skater with integrated 180/65-835C or 14/65-830C stapler isn’t just on show for the very first time at this year’s LIGNA in Hannover – visitors to the stand can even have a go themselves.

The innovative BeA Skater places staples with leg lengths of 40 to 65 mm at a precise 30 degree angle and is suitable for paneling timber and timber-frame constructions with gypsum fiber, OSB, gypsum board or wooden chipboard. As the device is pulled over the work surface, its integrated path control triggers the machine to fire staples at one of four easily selected, pre-defined intervals. Stapling can also be performed manually where necessary, such as when finishing off starter, finishing and panel joints. Thanks to its continuously variable height adjustment mechanism and no-mark wheels, the BeA Skater will look after delicate materials such as gypsum board or fire-protection panels, leaving no signs of pressure points or run marks.

Driven firmly into the ground…

The ground screw foundations that Krinner is unveiling at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover are a world-first that sets new standards in foundation engineering and wood-based construction.

Some things are so clear and obvious that not even the most skeptical critic would argue – such as the importance of a solid foundation for the stability of the building above. This applies just the same to a skyscraper in Dubai as it does to a carport at home. The latest advance in foundation engineering comes in the shape of Krinner ground screws, which open up a world of new possibilities for building carports and much more besides securely, cost-effectively and quickly using wood. Krinner joined forces with architects, engineers, property developers and master carpenters to design this symbiosis of wooden construction and cutting-edge foundation engineering – beating conventional alternatives in terms of its quality, environmental friendliness and cost-efficiency. The time has now come to celebrate its world premiere at LIGNA 2015.

Krinner ground screw foundations are laid without any need for excavation or concrete, which obviously benefits the workflow on site. The simple installation method delivers high-quality construction solutions for all kinds of ground – even compacted rock. The screws are driven in using special machines appropriate to the ground conditions and size of foundations – quickly, simply and without harming the environment. The galvanized screws measure between 55 cm and five meters long, and can easily be unscrewed and removed from the ground to dismantle a temporary construction.

Ready, shreddy, go!

Reinbold comes to LIGNA 2015 in Hannover to unveil new rotors for single-shaft shredders that have rounded cutting heads at the ends instead of conventional broaching knives.

For decades, Reinbold single-shaft shredders have been successfully shredding waste wood all over the world, both in the wood processing industry and in SMEs, where there is often a particular emphasis on achieving an optimum cost-benefit ratio. At this year‘s LIGNA in Hannover, Reinbold is unveiling the first rotors for use in its single-shaft shredders that feature rounded cutting heads at the outer ends of the rotors instead of conventional broaching knives.

The conventional broaching knife solution is still ideal for most shredding applications – but can cause problems when processing particularly bulky blocks of wood. For instance, thicker pieces can be forced to the edges of the rotor, where the flat blades may not shred them properly and may even cause jamming. The new rotors are equipped with high-quality, conical V8 rounded cutting heads with a diameter of 30 millimeters that not only take on the role of conventional broaching knives – they also increase throughput rates, as material is shredded evenly along the entire length of the rotor, right to the edges. They also prevent material blockages, as they reduce the risk of jamming.

Spot-on moisture levels

Baschild from Italy is appearing at LIGNA in Hannover to showcase its new ZOOM system that helps companies control the wood drying process on a more professional basis.

Freshly cut wood usually contains around 40 percent water and therefore needs to be dried. Controlling this process helps companies to achieve just the right workable moisture level for their needs, which is normally somewhere between 8 and 16 percent. It is important to control the drying process as accurately as possible so that is does not cause damage such as cracking, case hardening and warping. Baschild has just the solution on show at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover – its innovative ZOOM control system for wood drying, which has been designed entirely by the company’s own research department and is now in production in Italy to serve the global market.

The new ZOOM control system has been designed especially to take into account the way that traditional wood drying has changed. Its user-friendly, customizable operating interface and new functions make it so easy to manage that users can control the drying process from any PC anywhere, without having to install any software – all they need is an ordinary web browser. Experienced specialists can choose their own settings, while inexperienced users can rely on the configurations suggested by Baschild. This new control system is suitable for the following drying processes – standard, combustion, steam and high-temperature chambers.

Keep it clean

NESTRO GmbH is exhibiting on two fronts at LIGNA 2015 to showcase its range of innovative products and offer an impressive live demonstration of extractor technology.

NESTRO Lufttechnik GmbH from Thuringia in Germany is running not one, but two stands at LIGNA in Hannover to fully cater for all its customers. Besides its impressive live demonstration of extraction technology in Hall 26, its spacious, open-plan main stand in Hall 11 has an eye-catching display that’s bound to attract professionals. Visitors are invited to relax in the friendly atmosphere and find out about a whole range of exhibits, including the new NE 350 dust extractor.

The NE 350, which has a maximum capacity of 8,000 m³/h, is the latest addition to the successful dust extractor range from NESTRO Lufttechnik GmbH. It achieves a nominal flow rate of 6,927 m³/h using the corresponding vacuum of 2,750 Pascal. It is currently undergoing BG certification for wood dust filtering, which should be wrapped up by the end of June 2015. Besides wood, the NE 350 can also be used to filter dust from similar materials such as plastic, leather and paper and for other industrial processes that create dust. As all of the dust extractors are vacuum-based, their fans are fitted downstream from filters. Thus the NE series ensures maximum energy efficiency and is completely dust-tight. What’s more, the vacuum technology reduces the risk of fire caused by sparks, as metal splinters cannot reach the fan blades.

A magnificent seven!

VOLLMER GmbH, the specialist in grinding and eroding machinery, is exhibiting a whole package of innovations at this year’s LIGNA in Hannover.

This year at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover, VOLLMER GmbH from Swabia in Germany is focusing on moving “Forward with precision”. And the company’s exhibits include more than just its well-established range of grinding and eroding machinery for sharpening circular, band and gang saws and rotary tools. Indeed, Vollmer will also be showcasing a total of seven innovations in one fell swoop – the sharp end of cutting-edge technology, so to speak – to representatives from the wood processing industries, including sawmill owners, furniture makers, manufacturers of wood-based materials and sharpening services.

The circular saw is, of course, a linchpin of the timber industry – it is virtually impossible to find a sawmill or wood processing company whose operations do not revolve around circular saws and their performance. That is why five of the seven new sharpening machines are designed for carbide-tipped circular saws – the CP 650 and CPF 650 along with the CHP, CHC and CHF that were unveiled at the start of 2015, each of which is available in 840 and 1300 versions. All the sharpening machines are equipped with the new VOLLMER operating concept – a multifunction wheel for intuitive operation. The showcase of innovations is rounded off with the new CAG 200 sharpening machine for gang saws and the new EVOLUTION K850-M automatic saw blade sharpening machine from VOLLMER subsidiary Loroch. Thanks to its four CNC-controlled axes of motion, the EVOLUTION K850-M can be used to sharpen, retooth and automatically chamfer HSS/CV circular saw blades.

Volkslager 2.0

Storage technology specialist SYSTRAPLAN from Herford in Westphalia, Germany, is coming to LIGNA 2015 to showcase its Volkslager storage and retrieval system with integrated stack transportation on the base frame.

SYSTRAPLAN’s universal Volkslager concept has recently helped the storage technology specialist access a niche in the market, serving companies that have previously invested in area storage for reasons of cost. The advantages of an innovative high-bay storage system – costing roughly the same as an area storage system – proved just too good to refuse. SYSTRAPLAN is exhibiting an addition to its concept at this year’s LIGNA in Hannover with its Volkslager storage and retrieval machine with stack transportation integrated into the base frame.

This cost-effective storage and retrieval unit complete with integrated stack transportation is designed to enable the automatic picking of wood-based panels direct off the shelf. For just a modest outlay, companies can use the Volkslager system to significantly boost performance compared to conventional area storage. Thanks to the low stacks in the rack system, the storage and retrieval machine can now directly access a large variety of different types of boards and take them from the rack without having to rearrange boards first. To remove them from stock, the individual boards are safely picked and then directly moved to the panel saw by a telescopic vacuum frame that can extend out from both sides.

Men of STIHL

This year’s LIGNACup will see highly skilled lumberjacks battle it out in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS SERIES – the first of two knockout competitions that mark the start of the season.

There are two sports in Germany that have emerged from the darkest reaches of niche TV channels to become huge arena events – darts and, above all, lumberjack sports. Now the long wait for the start of the lumberjack season is almost over, with the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS SERIES set to get under way on 14 May at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover. At the world’s leading trade fair for the woodworking industry, the best of the best will mark the start of the lumberjack season with the first of two knockout competitions.

This year’s LIGNACup promises lots of action and the ultimate adrenaline rush, with the athletes demonstrating their skills with axe and saw to determine who truly is a cut above the rest. This exciting sport originated in Tasmania, Australia, where the first world championship was held in 1891. Its popularity soon spread to the U.S. and Canada. STIHL took lumberjack sport to the professional level in 1985 and, in 2001, the first German national championship proved it had put down firm roots in this country, too. For fans of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS SERIES, it’s also well worthwhile coming to LIGNA even on the days when the athletes are not competing. The lumberjacks will be giving daily demonstrations of their saw and axe skills in shows lasting around 45 minutes. Afterwards, visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions or try their hand at the single buck discipline. Take your turn with the two-meter pull saw and see whether you’ve got what it takes to join the professionals! For further information, visit: www.stihl-timbersports.de

The crème de la crème!

The German Association of Carpentry and Joinery is exhibiting the prize-winning entries to its “Form and Function 2015” competition for qualified apprentices at this year’s LIGNA in Hannover.

The first hurdles that the apprentices had to overcome to make it to LIGNA 2015 in Hannover were the regionals, which the finalists in “Form and Function 2015” came through with flying colors. Now, they need to battle it out at the national level by winning over a panel of judges. It certainly won’t be easy to choose the winners, as all the entries are highly creative, represent top quality and demonstrate meticulous craftsmanship.

In the three years it has taken them to work their way up from young trainees to carpenters who can satisfy specific customer requirements, the apprentices have also had plenty of their own ideas. The masterful crafting it has taken to perfect these ideas and turn them into their exhibition piece is certain to impress even the most discerning critics. The exhibits will be on display from 11 to 15 May at the stand run by the German Association of Carpentry and Joinery, where visitors to LIGNA are also invited to inspect them and vote for their favorite. The poll will decide the “Public’s Choice” award – and a number of lucky participants from the audience will also be picked for a prize.

Feast your eyes on this!

JoeScan is showcasing its innovative scan technology from the current JS-25 X series at LIGNA 2015 – for pretty much any and every sawmill requirement.

There’s hardly a sawmill these days that would risk working without reliable scanning technology – and JoeScan Inc. from the United States has been a major driving force behind this development. Since the launch of its JS-20 model in 2002, JoeScan has perfected the 3D measurement of wood in a number of key areas. For example, JoeScan leads the field in Ethernet communication for scanners, and it has conducted pioneering work in increasing the density that can be achieved on snapshot scanners to a spacing of six inches. The essence of JoeScan products can be summed up quite succinctly as simple, accurate, reliable and fast.

At this year’s LIGNA in Hannover, JoeScan is exhibiting its wide portfolio of innovative scanning technology based on the current JS-25 X series, which covers practically all the application areas in a sawmill – whether indoor or outdoor, transverse or lineal, and from logs to lumber. Customers can rely on JoeScan to meet their scanning needs for edgers, profilers, circular and band saws, to name just a few examples. To bring this cutting-edge technology to life for visitors, JoeScan is also taking 3D partial body scans of volunteers at its stand, which it will then digitally process.

Musical saws?

After two years of intensive development, fellner engineering gmbh is exhibiting its innovative acoustic circular saw monitoring system at LIGNA in Hannover.

“If you can hear something, you can measure it” is the basic principle that sparked the development of a system that seems set to revolutionize sawmill technology. Vienna-based fellner engineering gmbh has spent two years working with an Austrian project team from Stora Enso to research, refine and develop this device. It is now proudly presenting the “Circular Saw Monitoring” (CSM) system in its market-ready form at LIGNA 2015 in Hannover.

The CSM system is an innovative acoustic saw monitor that will allow sawmill operators to keep a very close eye on their equipment and enable them to plan and manage any maintenance with great accuracy. For example, the system can detect blade problems that occur due to “twisted” or “hard streaked” logs, or when sawmills are overloaded. In such an event, the CSM system will immediately halt the infeed before the sawblades get “jammed” or even suffer damage. As a result, the CSM system offers overall protection against wear and tear, which means that the log feed can be accelerated and thinner and taller saw blades used. By monitoring the sound level that the circular saws produce, operators can also determine the optimum time to change the saw blades. All these extra insights mean that the CSM system can easily end up paying for itself in just a few months.

Spray away – the Hessen way!

Finishing Brands Germany presents the Binks AG-363 spray gun at LIGNA 2015 – a prime example of the performance delivered by the latest coating technologies.

Like many other applications on an industrial scale, wood surface coating technology has made major progress over the course of time. While the drive for streamlining and automation has led to the development of new wood-based materials, each of these advances has also led to improvements in the performance of coating technologies. The Binks AG-363 spray gun that Finishing Brands Germany GmbH is exhibiting at LIGNA in Hannover this year is a prime example.

An automatic AirCombi spray gun of the latest generation, the Binks AG-363 is ideal for use in multi spray gun finishing machines, as its consistently high performance provides a firm basis for maximum cost-effectiveness and efficiency. The AG-363 offers all the advantages of the latest HVLP and AirCombi technologies. Its exceptionally fine atomization and soft spray jet provide a perfect finish and remarkably high transfer effectiveness coupled with low air and material pressure. The AG-363 thus sets new standards in surface quality, low paint consumption and compliance with VOC regulations. Further features that ensure consistently high coating quality include the indexed air cap and manually adjustable air control. These elements ensure that spray jets can be accurately reproduced and make it easy to control the spray image.
