MENLO PARK, Calif. - TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio, today announced that Intel Corporation is its newest corporate sponsor. The companies plan to collaborate on a series of workshops giving thousands of TechShop members hands-on access to Intel technology. The workshops will feature Intel’s recently announced Intel® Galileo, the first in a line of Arduino-compatible development boards based on Intel® architecture.
Intel Galileo combines the performance of Intel technology and the ease of the Arduino software development environment. Intel Galileo features the Intel® Quark SoC X1000, the first product from the Intel® Quark technology family of low-power, small-core products. Designed for the maker and education communities, the development board is easy to use for new designers and for those looking to take designs to the next level.
Intel’s sponsorship also solidifies TechShop’s plan to move and rebuild its original Menlo Park location, offering a new state-of-the art facility that will also serve as TechShop’s company headquarters.
“We’re thrilled to work with Intel to create a new innovation hub in Silicon Valley and new coursework for TechShop members nationwide,” said Mark Hatch, CEO of TechShop. “Intel is a true champion of innovation and this sponsorship furthers our mission of helping makers and entrepreneurs of all ages build their dreams and explore new ideas.”
TechShop has been the birthplace for scores of invention prototypes, including Square, Embrace, underwater submarine robots, bipedal robot legs, and many more. This sponsorship reflects Intel’s commitment to encourage innovation whether it takes place in a corporation, a classroom, a garage, or (the ultimate garage) a TechShop.
“We applaud TechShop’s mission of providing its members with digital and physical tools to make almost anything,” said Mike Bell, vice president and general manager of the New Devices Group at Intel. “We look forward to TechShop’s new Silicon Valley location and to putting the power of Intel technology into the hands of TechShop members everywhere so they can make whatever they dream up even better.”
With more than 5,500 members and six locations nationwide, TechShop is democratizing the access to tools of innovation by providing at each location more than $1 million worth of high quality machines, tools and software, such as 3D printers, waterjets, laser cutters, industrial sewing machines, digital prototyping software, among others. TechShop is upending the traditional paradigm of innovation by empowering entrepreneurs and makers to invent the next big thing with quicker time-to-market.
