Stuart Dean To Restore Williams College Library

NEW YORK -- Stuart Dean, an international provider of renowned architectural restoration services, is pleased to announce that the company will perform nearly its full array of services to refurbish and fully restore many of the architectural appointments to the library in Stetson Hall, a 90-year-old building on the Williams College campus in Williamstown, Mass.

Construction manager for the project, New England-based Consigli Construction Co., Inc. (Consigli), has contracted Stuart Dean to perform this large-scale, sensitive restoration work as part of a renovation and addition project to Stetson Hall, and the green construction of a new library and information technology center on campus.

"As a preeminent liberal arts institution, Williams College has a rich history, and we are proud to work with the college and Consigli on this project to refurbish and restore the intricate features that make this historic building unique," said Mark Parrish, president and CEO of Stuart Dean. "From the varying conditions of the surfaces to the unconventional cleaning methods that will be utilized, Stuart Dean prides itself on historic restoration projects such as this."

Stetson Hall is a 1923 Georgian revival building that includes such showcase pieces as Old English oak wood, Tiffany brass bookcases, ornate wrought iron railings and original spiral staircases. Stuart Dean's full array of restoration services will be utilized as part of this project, with the largest portion being architectural woodwork and decorative metal refurbishing, including brass, bronze, iron and steel. Stuart Dean's services also include marble, granite, brick, grout replacement and concrete restoration, in addition to a UV light-filtering film application on the windows to prevent sunlight damage to books, artwork and other hardware.

"Williams College is clearly focused on green construction with this project, and encourages companies working on the job to purchase their materials within 50 miles from the construction site, utilize environmentally-friendly materials to lower the overall carbon footprint of the project and dispose of these products in an appropriate manner," Parrish added. "Rather than replace an existing building or conduct significant demolition, they have instead focused on restoring the beautiful fixtures in this building for generations to come."

The restoration work is being completed in various phases, with the majority taking place throughout the fall of 2012. The refinishing work is expected to be completed by year's end, with additional woodwork being completed in 2013.
