COLUMBUS, OHIO – After successfully establishing a hiking trail at Murphy Preserve in West Virginia in September, Simonton Windows associates again volunteered to support The Nature Conservancy at the Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve in early October.
Located near Middelburg, Ohio, the Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve is an 800-acre location filled with a mixture of wetlands and streamside forests. Simonton associates gathered to plant local species of oak, hickory and poplar trees to help rejuvenate the land.
"With the guidance and support of The Nature Conservancy, our Simonton team worked to improve the Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve for future generations to enjoy," says Mark Savan, president of Simonton Windows. "We planted trees that will provide food and cover for future generations of wildlife."
Open to the public and owned by The Nature Conservancy since 2008, Big Darby Headwaters Nature Preserve features a handicap-accessible trail and interpretive signage showcasing the importance of the headwaters to people and wildlife. Visitors may traverse 2.5 miles of the preserve and view the restoration site of the area from a scenic overlook.
"The Simonton representatives worked side-by-side with our regular volunteers to plant 150 trees along the public trail and overlook areas," says Steve Ross, conservation volunteer coordinator for The Nature Conservancy in Ohio. "Their support was extremely valuable in helping us accomplish our goal for the day of starting to 're-forest' a former agricultural area at the preserve by adding more trees."
The preserve includes coldwater springs and streams that form the nourishing capillaries that are the lifeblood of Big Darby Creek's permanent flow downstream. These headwaters are fed by a complex of underground seeps, which contribute millions of gallons of clean, cold water to tributary streams of nearby Big Darby Creek, providing a habitat for plants and animals.
"It's a special privilege for everyone at Simonton and Fortune Brands Home & Security to be involved in supporting the important, ongoing work of The Nature Conservancy," says Savan. "We hope to play an active role in the future in maintaining and preserving many different areas of the country through our corporate wide sponsorship of The Nature Conservancy."
