Plywood Construction

Rockville, MD - Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths a design build remodeling contractor announces a significant discount for clients utilizing Medallion Cabinetry in their bath or kitchen remodeling project. The promotion runs through March 30, 2014. It features 50 percent off of the plywood box upgrade for all Medallion brand cabinets, regardless of other finishes such as painted kitchen cabinets vs stain or contemporary kitchen cabinets vs traditional.

The discount is specifically for the plywood box modification in Gold and Silverline Medallion Cabinetry lines. This luxury cabinetry is strong with a consistently smooth flat surface and resistance to the excessive moisture and humidity that plagues the DC metro area during the summer months. All purchasers of Medallion Custom Kitchen Cabinets in DC, Bethesda, Potomac and Chevy Chase will be pleased to know that Medallion Cabinetry is owned by Elkay which is family owned and made in the USA.

In order to maintain the highest quality standards, Medallion Cabinetry now utilizes plywood with engineered material in the core. The engineered core plywood found in Medallion Cabinetry supports CARBII standards and is LEED certified. There are many benefits to opting for engineered core plywood as opposed to strictly veneer-core plywood. Veneer – core panels are made by laying up layers, or plies, of wood so that the grain direction in each ply runs at right angles to the one next to it. Cross-grain construction is what gives plywood its strength and dimensional stability. This has been a cabinetry staple for over 3 decades.

Unfortunately over time, plywood manufacturers have reduced the thickness of outer hardwood veneers used on plywood with wood cores. Quality concerns developed with this change, which included grain or core transfer where the ply just under the veneer would transfer to the outside or exposed side of the veneer as well as cracking of that ply then transferring through the outer veneer. Gary Case, the owner of Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths, says, “These issues can occur in a kitchen design in Bethesda just as readily as a custom kitchen remodel in DC. The kitchen design build location and style are not relevant.” Medallion Cabinetry uses plywood with an engineered core to avoid these quality inefficiencies. By replacing the traditional wood core found in cabinetry with an engineered core Medallion eliminates grain/core transfer to maintain the highest quality in all Medallion finishes. Cracking of the outer hardwood veneer is also avoided because engineered cores do not expand or contract like solid wood cores. The combined-core panels finish better than veneer-core plywood because there are no voids below the face veneer and no defects to telegraph to the top. Notes Case, "This is especially important when you are doing a kitchen remodel in DC of contemporary kitchen cabinets which easily show telegraphing."

An additional benefit of engineered core plywood is that the engineered core is sanded to an exact thickness (versus wood core plywood which varies in thickness) resulting in a more consistent panel thickness, greatly improving the fit of the cabinetry components when assembled. This is especially important in contemporary kitchen cabinets because their doors are designed to be so tight together.

Medallion plywood cabinetry will remain discounted by Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths on all completed bath & kitchen design contracts through March 30, 2014. Contact Signature Kitchens Additions & Baths at 301-251-1880301-251-1880 to learn more.
