LOS ANGELES – Giving back to the community is central to the mission of Retire My Room (http://www.retiremyroom.com), the room makeover web series for retired seniors. The upcoming second season will see the show working with the St. Bernard Project and Friends of Rockaway to gift two disaster survivor families with new furnishings and total makeovers for their bedrooms.
Established in 2006, the St. Bernard Project (http://sandy.stbernardproject.org/) has helped rebuild homes for almost 700 families in storm-ravaged New Orleans and Joplin, Missouri. The organization has recently turned its attention to New York and New Jersey, where many residents are still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. SBP has forged relationships with several community-based organizations in the region, including Friends of Rockaway, a New York-based nonprofit group. Together, SBP, Friends of Rockaway, and Retire My Room will bring good news and kindness to two families who have survived these life-changing events.
“Living spaces are an important contributor to overall quality of life, especially as we get older,” explained host and creator AlgeRita Wynn. “Retire My Room works with retired seniors who want to freshen up a space inside their home. The series has a humanitarian perspective: we perform all of our expert makeovers and there are no economical restrictions on who can receive our services.”
Wynn added: “In the aftermath of disaster, it’s important to recapture a sense of normalcy as soon as possible. In its own way, Retire My Room is helping to do just that.”
Season one of Retire My Room was an unqualified success, as Wynn and her designers traveled from Los Angeles to Atlanta to Houston on their mission of home rejuvenation.
