Germany - The Bénazet Hall is the crown jewel of the world-famous Casino and Spa in Baden-Baden. In just under seven months last year the hall was completely renovated and given new colors and design, state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology and a larger gallery. The Dreier GmbH of Iffezheim was responsible for the design which incorporated veneer.
One challenge was in retaining the historic character of the hall. New doors and wall paneling had to match the 100-year-old doors, which were left untouched because they are subject to historic preservation laws. From the foyer it is possible to see the toll the years have taken in general wear-and-tear, nicks and scratches. From inside the hall the doors were equipped with modern fire protection material and covered with high-quality walnut veneer in a matching shade. The doors' solid brass frames were milled to accommodate new countersunk panes of glass and new fabric.
State-of-the-art sound equipment is hidden behind perforated wall elements beside the doors. The elements are dressed in four-piece diamond matched veneer in keeping with the historic character of the hall. Modern technology and architecture face off against almost 100 years of tradition in the newly designed Bénazet Hall. The architectural alterations reflect the hall's importance and the function of the spa and casino as a modern gambling site without destroying the character and charm of the traditional ballroom. The newly renovated hall can now accommodate 1,290 persons. The architect was Peter W. Kruse of Baden-Baden. Dreier GmbH was responsible for the paneling on the walls and doors and the balustrade covering.
The veneer manufacturer Schorn & Groh of Karlsruhe has supplied the veneer for many projects concerned with maintaining the object's historic ambiance. For Köthen Castle in Sachsen-Anhalt, for example, the company provided more than 4000 square meters of Lebanon cedar veneer for wall and door paneling, fire doors and fixtures in the Johann Sebastian Bach Hall.
