Origin Teak Introduces Teakology for Green Building

Orange County, CA - Origin Teak is introducing a whole new concept to "Cabinet Making." With a focus on the environment Teakology is an eco-friendly process to build cabinets.

Origin Teak Introduces Teakology for Green BuildingBefore you go pricing kitchen cabinets at the local home stores, consider having custom cabinets hand made from centuries-old 100% solid recycled teak using only 100% green building materials and environmentally responsible business practices for the same price as cabinets from the home store. Starting in 2008, no plywood MDF, veneers, or formaldehyde can be found anywhere in Origin Teak products and the cabinets themselves are removable and can be re-installed indefinitely meaning they will never be demolished and destined for the landfill. Not only are the cabinets "green" but every project is truly a work of art.

Since its inception in 2005, Origin Teak has always used 100% recycled solid teak. But after developing The Leaf Project at Earth island Institute, and a line of eco-friendly cleaners, Jason Nedelman, President and co-founder of Origin Teak, realized that that all green products and companies must take environmental, social, and economic factors into consideration. This meant not only the materials, but also the production and all people affected from the factory to the air quality in your home. The goal of the company became “cradle to cradle” responsibility for it’s products. This new completely green cabinet line, aptly named “Teakology,” looks at the product from start to finish and does it all with a focus on “socio-ecological" responsibility.

While the rest of the industry has been focused on creating a disposable product from less toxic plywood using wood from sustainable pulping sources, Origin Teak focuses on cutting no new trees, using only FDA approved non-toxic glues, and hand-crafting custom cabinets that are easily removable and reusable indefinitely, eliminating the need for demolition and disposal upon remodel. Much of the reclaimed teak comes from old houses built from plantation trees planted when Indonesia was a Dutch colony. The cabinets can be remounted indefinitely and age wonderfully to retain the same old-world quality they had when first installed. While it is the goal to one day eliminate or offset the entire environmental footprint of the company from the trees to fossil fuels used in transportation, to the installation of the cabinets, Origin Teak is initiating several environmental and social projects in Indonesia including replanting and a micro-lending program for its’ workers.

To further demonstrate their social responsibility, Origin Teak is working to ensure their factories will far exceed minimum environmental standards and that their employees are treated equitably. Jason travels to Indonesia every 6 weeks to personally oversee production and he is working with both the managers and employees at the factories to continually improve environmental performance and to institute programs that give the workers access to funds above and beyond salaries to secure better health care and education for the families.

Origin Teak works one-on-one with customers to create custom, unique, teak cabinetry and furniture. In the last year, Origin Teak has completed work on two historic Ole Hanson homes in San Clemente, Ca built custom outdoor furniture for the House of Blues in Dallas and indoor furniture and stonework for Sambazon Inc. headquarters in San Clemente, Ca. Origin Teak is well on its way to developing a whole new standard in the green construction arena.

About Origin Teak - Origin Teak Cabinetry was founded in 2005.

After 7 years managing various environmental projects, Jason opened a retail furniture/import store. Jason felt a strong desire to prove that higher quality designs and products combined with environmental responsibility do not need to mean a higher price tag, and that a better product could be provided with concern and a responsibility for the peoples and the families who create the product. Jason employs local artisans in Indonesia whose skills have been handed down for generations to create only the highest quality wood and stonework. In his spare time, Jason is recording a CD of original music, coaches volleyball at San Clemente High School, and is currently developing a TV series to document various social and environmental efforts in Indonesia.
