Oakwood Veneer Marks 15th Anniversary of Bubble-Free Vene

Troy, MI - November 12, 2012 - When wood veneer distributor Oakwood Veneer started in business 25 years ago, standard industry practice was to use 10 mil paperbacked veneer with contact cement as the glue.

As time went by, more and more people complained that the veneer ended up bubbling or cracking long after the initial installation. So many woodworkers began to decide against using veneer altogether.

It was with this problem in mind that Oakwood Veneer developed a new product that would revolutionize the industry fifteen years ago. Rather than a single 10 mil paperbacking, Oakwood began putting the same facings on two 10 mil backed veneer sheets stuck together including two internal layers of glue. The result was 22.2 mil Bubble-Free Veneer that solved the problem of bubbling and cracking when veneer was used with contact cement installations.

“Contact cement is actually the same thing as rubber cement so it never really dries,” Peter Rodgers, Oakwood’s CEO, said. “It’s like a living, breathing product that can change as time goes on. Bubble-Free Veneer was the solution to contact cement movement and it remains a best selling backer for us.”

Rodgers explained that swings in humidity involving too little or too much moisture caused excessive movement in the veneer and contact cement, which was the cause of the bubbling. The extra layer of paper was added for stability, which meant no movement, and no bubbles and cracks. The idea originally came as a similar concept to already existing wood-on-wood backing. While wood-on-wood consisted of veneer/paper/veneer as it composition, Bubble-Free Veneer was veneer/paper/paper.

Since its arrival, Bubble-Free Veneer has become the choice for architectural millwork, store fixtures, aircraft interiors, and many other veneer applications in which contact cement is the glue of choice. After the market caught fire for double paperbacked 22 mil veneers, nearly every veneer seller began stocking the new type of veneer.
