Mountain Woods Furniture to Grow Under New Owner

Laramie, Wyoming – Daryl and Maureen Joy of Peshtigo, Wisconsin announced the purchase of Mountain Woods Furniture, Inc., a leading producer of American rustic furniture since 1991. Mr. Joy had been seeking to purchase a manufacturing company, and after visiting the Wyoming plant in 2011 he “fell in love with the quality of the product.” Joy recognizes the importance of rebuilding the United States manufacturing base, and could think of no better way to help accomplish this goal than to grow one of the most respected American brands in the rustic furniture industry.

Joy knows about growing a business. He has decades of experience working with skilled employees, tight margins and innovative ideas to build successful enterprises. He started his career in the family trucking business and worked his way up to president in 2003. Under Joy’s leadership, the company grew and thrived, and his intention is to expand upon Mountain Wood’s current furniture product lines and “introduce new tooling and additional machinery that will help produce a quality product at the lowest cost possible,” he said.

A Respected Brand Moving to the Next Level

In the decades since its introduction, the Mountain Woods Furniture brand has grown to be cherished by consumers, interior designers and hospitality executives for their award-winning designs, graceful lines, attention to detail and industry-leading customer service. Their extensive line of products can be found in log homes, ranches, ski chalets and traditional homes throughout the United States and Canada.

“I am thankful for the excellent stewardship provided by Mike and Dee O’Connell during their ten years of ownership, and I am pleased that Dee will continue in her position as sales and marketing manager,” said Joy. He added, “Any company that has survived and is profitable in this economy is a very well run company.”

A Commitment to Sustainability

Joy credits the previous owners with the foresight to commit Mountain Woods to the sustainability movement long before it was fashionable. As a Founding Member of the Sustainable Furniture Council, the manufacturer has been in the forefront of the Green movement. Mountain Woods Furniture pieces have always been created by hand in Laramie Wyoming of reclaimed wood and sustainably-sourced local hardwoods.

Their furniture was selected for the 2007 Mountain Living magazine’s “Natural Dream Home” in Cordillera Colorado. A home, Joy notes, that won first place in the 2009 American Society of Interior Designers (Colorado Chapter) “Sustainable Home” category.

“One of the bedrooms in that majestic mansion, says Joy, was furnished from Mountain Woods’ Wyoming Collection reclaimed wood furniture line.” Assisted by that exposure to the industry press, designers and the public, demand for the Wyoming Collection grew rapidly. “It now represents a significant portion of the overall Mountain Woods Furniture production schedule,” Joy added.

Former Co-Owner Dee O’Connell had this to say about Joy: “This ownership change has been very positive for Mountain Woods Furniture. We have very skilled long-term employees who now have new opportunities for upward mobility within the company. The employees appreciate Daryl’s diligence about product quality and customer service, and already see that his solid leadership will take Mountain Woods Furniture to the next level.”

As a seasoned executive, with experience running companies in the trucking, real estate and construction industries, Joy saw an opportunity to take a successful, well-established company to the next level of growth. He is well aware of the growing trend of Americans demanding more American-made products (as reported by ABC News and the New York Times): “We are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the improving economy and preference for American-made products,” says the proud new owner of Mountain Woods Furniture, Inc.
