Pricing of March lumber futures spiked on  initial reports of Japan's massive earthquake, then fell back, though May futures are still elevated. Equity investment flowed to the wood industry, with acquisitions in Canada (Westridge Cabinets) and equity in the U.S. Lowe's, bullish on recovery, expanded its cabinet making operation; and Sauder Woodworking invested heavily in IT.

Lumber price spikes on Japan earthquake, tsunami

Lumber pricing spiked in the aftermath of Japan's massive earthquake. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange reports pricing on May lumber futures rose 0.7 percent to $311.10 per 1,000 board feet, but later retreated. Southern Yellow Pine dropped in price. While West Coast p

orts, gateways for lumber and wood products were unaffected, but some Japan freighters were put on hold.>>

Kiln fire spreads at Jasper Wood Products

Fire fighters had to pump water from the Willamette River since there were no fire hydrants nearby a wood products factory blaze. Investigators decided the cause was "accidental" and is still "undetermined" after investigating the blaze that claimed three buildings at Jasper Wood Products March 13 in Jasper, OR.

The world's largest wood pellet plant for biofuel is expected to open later this month in Waycross, GA.

Built by a German energy firm, it will export 750,000 tons of wood pellets to European generators each year.

Westridge Cabinets Ltd., Alberta's largest integrated manufacturer of kitchen cabinetry, has been acquired by Signal Hill, an equity firm. The company is advertising for positions opened for cabinetmaker and draftsman.
