Wood craft ranked top U.S. hobby

ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - Woodworking hobbyists spend more on their craft - a total $3.32 billion -  than other crafting enthusiasts.

According to a new study by the Craft & Hobby Association, more than 16.8 million households do woodworking, earning the hobby the number four ranking, right after drawing (21 million households), scrapbooking (18.4 million) and crocheting (17.4 million).

The crafting association says its U.S. Attitude & Usage Study found that 56% of U.S. households crafted at least once during 2010, contributing $29.2 billion U.S. craft and hobby industry.

The Craft & Hobby Association, which will hold its national conference and trade show this summer in Chicago, tracks sales in eight broad categories for 53 individual crafts. Woodworking hobbyists fall within the $9.9 billion General Crafts segment, which represents 34% of all craft industry sales.
