Southwoods-Arauco Lumber to Close, Lay Off 100 Workers

MANNING, SC -- More than 100 workers at Southwoods-Arauco Lumber & Millwork LLC will lose their jobs when the company closes at the end of June, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Diego de la Maza, general manager of the Chile-based company, told workers June 1 that a depressed housing market has not allowed the company to generate the volume of business needed to stay open.

John Truluck, executive director of the Clarendon County Development Board, said an emergency response team from Workforce Investment will be at the company next week to help workers, who will be paid by Arauco for 60 days, find other jobs.

Opened as Southwoods Lumber and Millwork in July 1994, the company was purchased in 2003 by Arauco, headquartered in Santiago, Chile.
