Pesky Pine Beetles Factor into Plywood Plant"s Layoffs

KELOWNA, BC -- A spokesman for Tolko attributed pine beetle damage and a softened market as factors in the company’s recent layoff of 140 people at its Kelowna plywood division. Sheila Catlin, manager of corporate communications, told the The Morning Star, "The beetle has critically reduced the ongoing availability and increased costs of the high-quality logs required to support Kelowna’s veneer and plywood business."
